I am beginning this blog as a beginner in the fundraising world. I have recently started my first job as a Resource Development Director for the Ark-La-Tex Crisis Pregnancy Center. My hope is that this blog will help me to track my growth, to learn through writing, and to spark conversations about the topic of fundraising.
To begin I want to share what I believe to be so valuable about all nonprofits. The value is the action. A nonprofit is designed to meet some sort of societal need. Many nonprofits receive no government funding (some do, but not the majority), so the money to run each organization must come from somewhere. It comes from donors. It comes from people who are passionate about what ever work you may be doing.
For example, consider a no-kill animal shelter. That shelter probably receives most of it’s donations from those who love animals and believe that they should not die if they are found. Someone who doesn’t like animals, or maybe had a bad experience with an animal once will more than likely never give to that shelter. In the case of a pregnancy center, like the one that I work at, someone who is pro-choice may never give to our organization because our work is not their passion.
For donors, it is all about their passion and if you are not acting out on their passion then they won’t give to you.
So, what does this mean? Well it means that as a fundraiser or development director, one must be focused. Focus is the key. When an organization markets their events and fundraisers it is important to know your target audience. When the target audience has been identified. GO FOR IT. I want to hold nothing back. My goal is to keep the pro-life community in Shreveport so involved with the CPC and so “in the loop” so that when we have a fundraiser there is a community that is eager and willing to donate and participate. Why? Because we are putting action to their passions.
Nonprofits all across the world are doing the same thing and what an honor it is to work for the betterment of society.
Fund raising is a gigantic task.
You talk of the Art of fund raising.
That should be a stupendous to know and tell.
All the best to YOU
Fond Regards
Shiva
